From Numbing to Recharging: Transform Your Daily Rituals for More Energy and Focus

In our modern world filled with stimuli and distractions, it's easy to fall into habits that momentarily distract us from our stress but don't truly recharge us. Mark Tigchelaar, author of the book "Focus On/Off," points out that numbing is not the same as recharging. In other words, passively consuming distractions don't help us restore our energy or improve our focus. So, how can we apply this philosophy in our daily lives and transform our habits to experience genuine recharging? Let's explore.

  1. Conscious Relaxation: Instead of simply numbing ourselves by endlessly scrolling through social media or watching TV, try to consciously relax. This could mean meditating, taking a leisurely walk in nature, or simply enjoying a cup of tea without distractions. By consciously relaxing, you give your mind the chance to truly unwind and replenish your energy.

I notice that I sometimes numb myself by binge-watching Netflix series or feeling the need to scroll through my phone to "relax" after a busy evening. Afterwards, I don't feel relaxed at all and end up lying awake in bed.

  2. Active Rest: Incorporate active rest moments into your daily schedule. This doesn't just mean physically resting but also giving your mind a break. Turn off your phone, avoid work-related thoughts, and do something you enjoy, like reading, drawing, or listening to soothing music. Active rest helps you recharge and provides a fresh perspective on the rest of your day.

My mornings start with meditation and yoga exercises, which helps me begin the day relaxed and with a fresh outlook. The walks I take around noon also help me regain fresh energy and focus for the rest of my day. In the evening, around 8 p.m., I go upstairs to meditate, prepare for the night, and then read in bed. Sometimes, I let my evening rest moment slip by watching another episode of a series, but I always regret it afterwards because it doesn't contribute to my well-being.

  3. Quality over Quantity: When it comes to free time, prioritize quality over quantity. Instead of filling your free time with superficial activities, invest in relationships and experiences that truly energize you. Spend time with friends and family, share moments of genuine connection, and create memories that will sustain you during difficult times.

I increasingly manage to put my phone aside during these moments, which gives me more peace and the opportunity to truly connect with the people I'm with. Otherwise, my attention is divided, and I'm not fully present in the here and now.

  4. Being Outdoors: Nature has a uniquely healing power. Make regular time to go outside and enjoy the natural environment. Whether it's a walk in the park, a bike ride through the woods, or simply sitting in your backyard, the fresh air and natural surroundings will help you recharge and refresh your mind.

Walking in nature gives me a lot of energy and relaxation. I listen to the sounds around me, marvel at the animals and plants I see. During a walk, I never listen to a podcast and prefer to leave my phone at home. That's how I recharge best.

  5. Conscious Choices: Become aware of your habits and the impact they have on your energy and focus. Whenever you notice yourself numbing, stop and ask yourself if it truly recharges you. If not, look for alternatives that renew and strengthen you.

Awareness is the first step. Once you're aware of your own patterns and their effects on you, you can change them. I often catch myself mindlessly grabbing my phone and scrolling through it. For me, it's really a point of focus to put it down more often.

By applying the five principles above in your daily life, you can transition from numbing to recharging. By consciously choosing activities that give you energy and improve your focus, you'll find yourself more productive, deriving more satisfaction from your daily activities, and experiencing a deeper sense of well-being. So, let's strive together for a life where we not only spend our days but truly live them.
